Area calculationArea calculation
The ability to calculate the area between points selected by the user. Most GPS units with this feature allow this calculation to be read in both metric and imperial notation.

Audible alarmsAudible alarms
Alarms can be used to mark time, and on some units will sound when the user arrives at a certain GPS coordinate, or strays from a pre-calculated course.

Audio book playerAudio book player
A software feature that allows units to play audio books (purchased from Audible.com) to be played through an internal speaker and if available, FM transmitter or headphone jack.

Automatic routingAutomatic routing
A feature enabling the GPS receiver to calculate the quickest and/or shortest route between two given points.

Barometric altimeterBarometric altimeter
A pressure sensor allowing the GPS unit to display current and historical ambient air pressure. When properly calibrated, this information can be used for accurate altitude readings or to track weather patterns.

Bike speed/cadence sensorBike speed/cadence sensor
Use primarily in fitness products, this small piece of hardware attaches to the wheel and chassis of the user's bike and collects data about pedaling strokes per minute for performance feedback.

Marine data charts compiled by Garmin for coastal areas of the world to be used in compatible GPS receivers.  The data includes depths, navigation aids/hazards, marina's and much more.

Marine data charts compiled by Garmin with all the data you would find on a paper chart but with the added feature that allows a user to see the ocean floor in 3D (Fish eye View).  These charts also include satellite imagery of harbors to assist in better navigation.

Custom POIsCustom POIs
Points of Interest created or downloaded by the user, either by marking locations on the GPSr, or by loading them via a POI uploader. They can be searched, viewed on the GPSr screen, and navigated to.

Electronic compassElectronic compass
An internal electronic compass that displays heading information even when a clear GPS signal is not available.

External temperatureExternal temperature
The ability of a GPSr to read and display current ambient temperature at its current location.

FloatsFloats
When dropped or placed in water, the GPSr will remain positively buoyant and stay at the water's surface as opposed to sinking.

Foot podFoot pod
A small electronic sensor that, when attached to the wearer's shoe, gather's information about how often the user's show impacts the running surface. This data is sent wireless to a compatible fitness GPS unit, where the data is calculated and the speed, distance, and pace of the user is displayed. This does not need a GPS signal to operate.

Geocaching modeGeocaching mode
A software feature that will display and sort Geocaches that have been loaded into the unit's memory by the user. Geocaches can be marked as "Found" (with their 'Find' date marked in the calendar), and notes can be entered about each cache as well.

Hands-free callingHands-free calling
The ability of a unit to communicate wirelessly with your compatible Bluetooth-enabled cell phone. Calls can be placed by using either your phone or the GPS unit when tethered via Bluetooth, and routed through the GPS's internal speaker and microphone.

Heart rate monitorHeart rate monitor
A strap that fits around the user's chest and wirelessly transmits heart-rate data to a compatible fitness GPS unit. This information can be logged for training purposes, and the feature does not require a GPS signal to operate.

Hunt/fish calendarHunt/fish calendar
A feature of man handheld GPS receivers that displays the predicted quality of hunting & fishing at selected locations at selected times. This information is based on historical data and logical algorithms.

Lane assistLane assist
When approaching an intersection, the GPS will display a 3D view of the upcoming interchange and will indicate the optimal lane in which lane the user should travel. This feature will also typically display realistic highway signs the user may encounter in these situations. This feature is not available for every intersection. New intersections are typically included with mapping updates.

Lap historyLap history
The ability of an equipped GPS to retain the time, distance, and pace data for previous laps of a user-defined course.

MP3 playerMP3 player
An interface that allows for the playback of MP3 audio files through the GPS's internal speaker and if available, FM transmitter (for car stereo playback) or headphone jack.

Marine mapMarine map
The ability to display optional marine mapping, which includes navaids, obstructions, wrecks, ramps, depth contours, and more. The mapping data varies from unit to unit, so please check each individual product page to see what is included, and what format can be added.

NMEANMEA
A standard text-string format from the National Marine Electronic Association for communication between marine electronic devices, such as echo sounders, GPS, auto-helms, and more. NMEA 0183 is a standard using ASCII to define a navigation sentence to transmit to a receiver.

NOAA weatherNOAA weather
A feature of radio-enabled GPS that allows the unit to receive area-specific weather alerts from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association broadcasts.

PPSPPS
This function privides a very accurate output from the GPS unit to assist in timing. Generally, one pulse per second is output to an accuracy of 250 nanseconds or better. Usually found on OEM board level GPS units or on related GPS sensors.

Picture viewerPicture viewer
Using the included interface, users can view properly-formatted photos on the GPSr screen. These photos can be loaded into the memory of the GPSr or loaded from an option memory card (if supported).

Remote controlRemote control
Input can be augmented by a wireless remote control. Some units allow full address entry using the remote, while others use the remote simply to signal the GPSr that the user will be giving audible commands. Varies by GPS model, please check each product description for more detail.

Route avoidanceRoute avoidance
An optional setting that allows the user to program the unit to avoid using certain areas when calculating a navigation route. Typical avoidances include, but are not limited to: highways, toll booths, bridges, and user-defined construction areas.

Speaks street namesSpeaks street names
A feature that enables the GPSr to read aloud the street names on the navigation route. (ie "Turn left on Main Street" as opposed to "Turn right ahead") .

Speech recognitionSpeech recognition
The ability of the GPSr to receive and respond to voice commands. Commands can be given to navigate through menus, select destinations, and change settings.

Speed limit indicatorSpeed limit indicator
An option which allows the GPSr to display the speed limit of the roadway on which the user s traveling. This data is quite accurate, however it is not a substitute for posted speed laws.

Sport watchSport watch
The unit is suitable for being worn as a sporty, fashionable watch as well as serving as a function GPS or fitness device.

Street mapStreet map
The GPSr is capable of displaying fully-detailed street mapping loaded by the user.

Sun and moon informationSun and moon information
The ability of a GPSr to display the times for the rise and set of the sun and moon on any given day, viewable in calendar format.

Tide tablesTide tables
High and Low tide times for a chosen tide station and selected date, displayed in a graph. This data is valuable when determining the times that certain waterways are navigable.

Topographic mapTopographic map
Mapping of an area displayed in a relief, consisting of contour lines and large-scale detail. Mapping typically features contours, elevations, summits, parks, coastlines, geographical points, and water features. This mapping is suitable for hiking, biking, hunting, camping, and various outdoor activities in which the user needs to know the surrounding terrain.

Touch screenTouch screen
A feature of a GPSr that allows menus, options, and data input to be controlled by the user by use of a dynamic, touch-sensitive screen, as opposed to using fixed buttons.

Unit-to-unit transferUnit-to-unit transfer
Units enabled with this feature can transmit waypoints, routes, and tracks from one GPSr to another. This can be accomplished by using either a data transfer cable, or wirelessly (in properly equipped units). Check each unit's product description to see if it is capable of wireless transfer, as well as what data it can transfer.

Water temperature sensorWater temperature sensor
This sensor can be found on various Garmin transducers.  It measures the surface temperature of the water around a boat.  This data can be used to find the best fishing location based on the species you are looking for.

WaterproofWaterproof
Each unit is rated for certain levels of protection against water; see each unit's Features List for this data. IPX levels range from 0 (no protection) to 8 (suitable for continuous immersion beyond 1 meter deep). Units marked "waterproof" are rated IPX7, which is suitable for immersion up to 1m of water for up to 30 minutes.

Where Am IWhere Am I
A feature exclusive to Garmin products that, when selected, displays the current GPS coordinates, nearest address and intersection, as well as nearby hospitals, police stations, and fuel stops.
